Fasting

Learn the essential truths and practices that establish a life with Christ.

INTRODUCTION

Biblical fasting is the voluntary setting aside of food for a limited time so that a person or community can seek God with focused prayer, humility, repentance, worship, or discernment. Scripture joins outward fasting with an inward return to God and a life of justice, mercy, and obedience. Fasting does not purchase God’s favor, prove spiritual superiority, or force Him to grant a request. It creates intentional space to bring the body, attention, and desires under a prayerful response to God.

WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS ABOUT FASTING

Matthew 6:16–18 KJV

“Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”

Isaiah 58:6 KJV

“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”

Acts 13:2–3 KJV

“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”

DEFINITION IN EVERYDAY LANGUAGE

What is fasting?

Fasting is choosing for a limited period to abstain from food while giving special attention to God through prayer and Scripture. The purpose is not merely to go hungry; it is to seek God sincerely and allow Him to examine desires, motives, habits, and priorities. A fast may accompany repentance, intercession, worship, or an important decision. It should be practiced humbly and responsibly. People who are pregnant, have diabetes or an eating disorder, take medicines affected by food, or live with other medical concerns should seek qualified medical guidance before fasting from food. When food fasting is unsafe, a person can still practice focused prayer and temporarily set aside another ordinary activity without calling unnecessary harm spiritual devotion.

OFFER YOUR PERSONAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father, draw my attention away from distraction and toward You. Examine my motives and show me whether fasting is wise and appropriate for me. Keep me from pride, performance, and the desire to impress others. If I fast from food, give me wisdom to do so safely, humbly, and prayerfully. Let this time deepen repentance, compassion, obedience, and love rather than becoming an empty outward exercise. Teach me to hunger for Your truth and to respond faithfully to what You reveal. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
